What Is It?

Chromatron is a digital art studio and gallery where you can create your own personal artworks and order them as high-quality physical drawings or paintings.

Simply upload any image you like, use various modification tools directly in the browser and then let our unique painting robot do the hard work. You can choose from a variety of archival-grade materials and dimensions of up to 1.4 x 1.8 meters (70.8 x 55 inches).

Short of artistic ideas? Then simply pick a creation from the ever-growing gallery of production-ready artworks. Or clone and use them as starting point or inspiration for your own work.

In the future, we will also offer curated artist collections. Professional artists will be invited to create works with Chromatron. These will be available as limited series, complete with signature and certificate of authenticity.

Art Studio Methods and Tools

We are an art and design studio and specialize in creating art at the interface with technology; most of them are post-internet in concept and digital/computational in method, and with a reflection of the concept in the physical execution. In our work we have developed a number of tools, algorithms and machines and we realized that they have potential even beyond our own imagination. That's why we decided to make them accessible to everyone. So that also you can create. We will take care of production and delivery for you.

Distinct Artistic Style

With Chromatron you can turn your own images or designs into anything from a realistic reproduction to an abstract, pop-art or neo/digital-impressionist artwork, or a style you are about to invent yourself. This service is perfect for anyone looking to transform their digital images into large-format physical art.

The algorithms in chromatron are based on colour psychology. Inspired by divisionism, printing and display technology, colours in the original image are deconstructed into channels of a discrete palette and reconstructed using various geometries. As a result of how our brains process visual information, the interaction of the colours of the palettes create the perception of colours that have no physical presence.

This effect (divisionism or chromoluminarism) is used throughout art history, mainly in the Neo-Impressionist and Pointillism school where the painting is defined by the separation of colours into individual dots or patches that interact optically.

Additionally to the discretization and choice of the palette, scale and distance can influence the perception of the artwork. From further away, colours and printing details merge into a smooth representation. Looking closer, the discretisation in space and colours create new intriguing structures.

Unique Machine Paintings

Ordered creations will be produced using our custom-built, large-scale drawing and painting robot in a size of up to 1.4 x 1.8 meters (70.8 x 55 inches). This machine works extremely accurately but also adds its own character to the artwork. This is what makes the execution of the artwork so unique.

Archival Grade Materials

To guarantee the utmost color accuracy and longevity, we utilise lightfast ink pigmented water-based ink and high quality acrylic paint. All the materials are archival grade.

You can choose from a variety of materials, including archival paper, and canvas, to suit your specific needs. Whether you're creating a statement piece for your home, a professional display for an exhibition, or a unique gift, our service guarantees a flawless and impactful result.

The previews of your creations in Chromatron are highly accurate. They are generated in a high-fidelity simulation of the drawing/painting process using the exact real-world colours and tools you choose.
